If you’re making plans to make an addition to your family or have already welcomed one or two into the world, then you might be looking for a house with more room. Unfortunately for many young couples the required financial standing it takes to acquire the mortgage for your average 3 bedroom home in a safe neighborhood with good schools is nearly impossible in the wake of the recent housing bubble. Young couples can still attain some sort of mortgage loan as long as their credit history isn’t dastardly, but they can quickly become forced into having to sacrifice one or several of what they consider necessary conditions of their future home. Maybe the structure isn’t kid-friendly. Maybe the school system is less than outstanding. It’s very hard to get everything you want in a family home when you’re at the mercy of a bank’s barebones high-risk mortgage agreement.
But there’s a way you can make it work. Building your own custom house has never been a more viable option for serious home owners. While construction loans aren’t particularly easier to obtain verses a conventional mortgage, the freedom you receive in the design and location of your residence more than makes up for the added paperwork of getting a work site insured. Even if small house plans are the only option available in your price range, the customization grants you the ability to utilize the small space to maximum efficiency relative to your particular family expectations. Plus – how fun is the idea of picking a tract in the safe neighborhood with the good schools, and choosing what house you get to live in?
The obvious drawback is that you will likely have to accept moving into a developing suburban sprawl with room left for construction. But chances are you were already checking these kinds of neighborhoods out anyway if your mortgage power was meek. Besides, as long as you’ve done your homework and concluded the community has a strong footing, the chance to have a home built to your preference remains steadfastly worth it.
The options are not super-specified, and you’ll likely be choosing from house designs that don’t stray far from the same structural pattern. But don’t underestimate the importance of having control over the interior design and what that means for ensuring an environment that encourages growing minds and discourages childhood injury. The default design won’t factor a child living in the second story bedroom with a wide reeling window. But you can call for a tweak and make sure there’s a way to childproof the window while keeping it capable of being opened.
If you’ve always dreamed of being able to build your ideal citadel of nuclear family perfection, then having a house built for you to the maximum level of customization possible is near to that dream. It might not be Xanadu, but it’ll be home, and more importantly it’ll be the exact home you wanted exactly where you wanted to be. In these turbulent times you couldn’t ask for anything more for you and your children.
